Dr. Nikolaos Mamalis holds a position as R.S.S. at the Department of Theater Studies of the University of Peloponnese, in Nafplion. He teaches Opera-related courses focusing on Music for Theatrical Performances, while he conducts research activities on issues concerning Theater, Opera and Contemporary Music.
He holds a B.Sc. in Physics (1983), Department of Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He also holds an Accordion Degree (1976), a Piano Diploma from the Greek Conservatoire (1992), and a M.A. (1990) in Aesthetics and Sciences of Arts from the University of Sorbonne (Paris I)., in Paris. In Paris he studied the piano at the École Normal de Musique de Paris (1988-1993), attended seminars at the GRM and IRCAM (1988-1999) and completed his Doctoral Dissertation (1994) entitled: “Music and space; the space of the music” http://www.theses.fr/1993PA010748 . In this study he investigates the contribution of audio space to the musical composition and proposes a new theoretical approach and classification of the works that exploit the spatial parameter as a functional component of the modern synthesis.
He has published books on Music History, Music Education, has taught undergraduate courses and held seminars on Musicology and Music for the Theater at the Department of Philology of the University of Crete (1994-2000), the University of Patras (2001-2009) and the Hellenic Open University (2002-2017).
