Georgios Fotopoulos is a Professor of Regional Economics, Head of Department of Economics, and director of the Enterprise, Sectoral and Regional Analyses Lab (ESREGAL) at the University of Peloponnese (Greece). He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science (1998), and an M.Sc. in Regional Science from the University of Reading (1993). He is an Economics graduate of the University of Athens (1991). He was awarded a National State Scholarship Foundation scholarship in Spatial Economics and Regional Development Policy.
He is an applied economist whose research interests lie at the intersection of Entrepreneurship, Regional Economics/ Economic Geography and Industrial Economics. Within this intersection of sub disciplines his research tries to understand the driving forces and impediments of the topics of interest at different levels of analysis (individual, firm, industrial sectors, regions) and the interactions between the actors and factors involved.
He has published in top-tier international peer review academic journals (among which: Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Research Policy, Journal of Economic Geography, Regional Studies, Environment and Planning A, Small Business Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Economics Letters, Journal of Regional Science, Papers in Regional Science, Environment and Planning C) as well as in international and Greek collective volumes. He is an Editorial Review Board Member of Small Business Economics and member of international scientific organizations, has participated in international scientific conferences and has acted as referee for a number of top tier academic journals.
He has taught postgraduate courses in Microeconomic Analysis, Industrial Organization, Managerial Economics, International Trade, Economics for Public Management, and Regional and Local Development. He has supervised numerous M.Sc. dissertations and a number of Ph.D. theses.
His current research is on the geography of high growth firms, entrepreneurial ecosystems, persistence in regional entrepreneurship rates, and spatial contexts for entrepreneurship.
